The Process of starting Counselling
1. Initial Assessment
Your first 50-minute session will take the form of an initial assessment.
For us, it gives us the opportunity to find out more about you and your life story, and what has brought you to counselling. It also gives us the opportunity to work out how we can support you, as well as obtaining important information relating to risk, medication and previous therapy.
For you, it is the opportunity to share your goals and expectations for counselling, and to ask any questions or discuss any concerns you might have. Perhaps most importantly it gives you the opportunity to meet with us (be it in person or online), and to help you determine if we are the right counsellor for you.
2. Starting Therapy
If you decide at or after your initial assessment, that you would like to begin counselling with us, we will discuss a specific day and time for your weekly sessions, with the option to work short or long term. You will have a set weekly time-slot with your counsellor, and for the purposes of our therapeutic work and progress, it is important that we meet weekly, and that you guard this slot in your diary.
To be transparent (which is our ethos at Wellness), therapy can be challenging, it can be emotional, and is rarely a quick fix. The commitment from our side is that we will work together, at your own pace, and we will ensure that the necessary framework and support is in place to help stabilise you throughout.
3. Ending Therapy
We are pleased to be able to offer both short and long term therapy, and so there will be no fixed end date for your counselling with us. We have clients who work with us for 6-8 weeks, and others who want to continue in counselling for several years, it is your decision. As always, our main consideration is to ensure your safe transition out of therapy, and to provide all the support necessary to enable you to do this successfully.
